OverviewTitle- Feminine Duties
Size - 18 x 22 Medium - Photography Date - March 2024 ExhibitionThe inspiration of this piece is Carrie Mae. She is a black photographer who displays works of feminine ideals. My intention for this work is to show the feminine ideals that are placed on women. How women are supposed to be the house maids and cook and clean for their husbands but also staying young and pretty. This idea makes women feel like they have to provide the house duties for their families and the men do the providing of money and doing the bills. This is important to the purpose of this piece because the personal object shows the beauty in the way that women had to portray themselves and the kitchen of this piece shows the duties they also have as wives to their husbands, they must cook, clean and take care of their husbands.

Inspiration
Above are my inspirations for my final piece. The artist's name is Carrie Mae Weems, she is a block photographer who captures images of feminine ideals and duties. She shows how women are supposed to be beautiful and how this is passed on through generations and is seen as normal. Weems provides the issues women face: subjectivity, capacity to reveal the female body and the woman's self image. Her images portray a family inside of the dinning room which seems to be the main area of the house. The girl and the woman are seen applying makeup and showing how being a woman is learned and is practiced but men see this act as knowing who you are already and not having to search for it like how women do.
Planning
Jewelry box on the stove top,Women in history have been seen as objects that have to sit and look pretty while also taking care of the kids and doing all housework while men would go and earn the money. Women's personal objects to themselves were mostly jewlery. In this piece it will be about women as objects throughout history and having to do all house work which why the stovetop is shown in the drawing.
The history of being a woman and finding your place in society when all women are supposed to be the same and care for their husbands. |
Experimentation
Here is another position we tried but it was covering too much of her outfit and her face to the camera and it looked awkward.
|
Here on the left was more experimentation with the positioning of the model and I liked this pose because you could see her outfit more but I liked the look of her in the mirror more so I moved her again.
|
Here is my final position of the model and before I cropped it and before I added the filter. I thought this picture came out great and just like how I wanted it too. I think throughout this process I developed more skills in photography and the use of light and shadows of the works and using the mirror.

Similarities
- In the piece I made I found the general look of thee pieces to be similar I used a black and white filter.
- The mirror and jewelry found inside of the piece.
- The same ideas and function and purpose of the pieces.
- In Weems piece she is focused on the ideals more on black women and what their standards are I am more focused on women as a whole.
- Weems uses the dinning room in her piece and I used the Kitchen in mine symbolizing different ideas.
Reflection
I think through this piece I was able to show skill in photography and the purpose of my piece. There is a real purpose and true idea behind the work I created I wanted to show how women are overlooked and seen as just a pretty object in the home that cooks cleans and takes care of the family without and=y questions asked. How women are supposed to stay pretty because the second they aren't seen as pretty they are seen as worthless and not worthy of anything in life. This fact is true many women feel worthless once they have lost their sense of beauty in themselves. I want people to look at my piece and reflect their own ideals into it to see how beauty affects their relationships with their lives and how they view the world. The biggest challenge i came to in this project was defiantly the idea of the piece I couldn't find a way to include all the pieces I wanted too so I just threw them together in different ways until it felt correct. With previous concepts I have explored the views on women and this correspondes greatly. My favorite part was defiantly taking the pictures and seeing my thoughts come together
