OverviewTitle-
Size - 3'/3' Medium - Oil on Canvas Date - March 2024 ExhibitionThe intention for this work was to somewhat replicate one work in my comparative study, Vermeer's "Young Woman With a Water Pitcher". Deliberately appropriating the objects, style and pose of Vermeer's work to make my own piece, my self portrait.

Inspiration
The inspirations for this piece are both Vermeer, he painted women doing many things like holding pitchers or balances or being models. The intent for making this work was to try to recreate Vermeer's painting style of baroque and put myself into the work making it a self portrait. In the work there is a woman holding a pitcher and also looking out a window. My first reaction to this work was, is this a woman who works for the house? Is she the mother? aalso is that she looks like a maid o the 1600s. In the work there is a lot of balance, color, value, depth, and texture. The pitcher in the work is very emphasized not only is it a part of the title but also the hand of the woman holding the pitcher. The viewers of this painting are supposed to look at the face of the woman then go down her arms to look at what she is interacting with to see the whole painting entirely. I think Vermeer makes these works of woman doing certain things to show what women do throughout the day and a glamorized version of it. I notice in this work I replicated that the woman looks content not exactly very happy but she isn't upset that she is where she is.
Planning
Process
Stage oneMy first stage with this process was to paint the dress and start my skin tone, below are the colors I used mostly for the skin tone, I mixed light, medium and dark skin colors for myself so I could add shadows and highlights. For the dress I made a very dark gray, medium gray and light gray. These colors were used to make the dress

Experimentation
When making the table it was hard to see the projections. I used the new projector in the classroom and it did not give me much general shape of each part of the table so I had to eyeball them from the reference a bit. I mixed reds together to get a deep red for the part that is shadowed and than a lighter red for the un shadowed part of the table.

Critique
Similarities
- The main objects in each painting reference and my final are the same, the table, the window and the pitcher are in both painting.
- The form of the main character is the same in each.
- Wearing a dress in each picture reference and final.
- The backgrounds of each work reference and final are different
- There is less light and shadow in my piece because I changed the background
- The planning was definitely different, I used a projector to get my reference onto my canvas, in Vermeer's piece he had to have someone pose for his reference.
Reflection
In this painting i think I refined many of my painting skills and my techniques that I use during painting. This was the first oil painting that I have done before and I had to learn how to use the paint. The paint gave a more blended and professional look to my work and I really enjoyed using them and I will continue to use them in the future. I think as an artist I developed, I moved on from just being able to use acrylics to being able to use oils. My biggest inspiration was "Young Woman With a Water Pitcher" by Vermeer, which is one of the pieces I study in my comparative study. In my previous works that include the ideas and themes of Woman in history and masters in art, Vermeer gives the inspiration for being on of the masters in art he isn't a woman but he mostly does portray and paint woman in his works. I think my favorite part of this process was learning how to use the oils, and finding out how much easier they are to use compared to other paints.
